Today I saw an old man walking,
slowly along the road.
I watched the careful way
he placed each foot,
as if the ground
required more thought than it once had.
I remember saying,
That will be me someday.
Years passed
the way years do.
Today I saw a young man walking,
quickly along the same road,
his hands loose at his sides,
his eyes somewhere ahead.
I watched him for a while.
And I remembered:
that was me
someday.
